THE FRIENDS of EDEE GREENE are raising funds for a memorial sculpture to be erected on the grounds of The new Women in Distress Shelter in Deerfield Beach. Edee Greene a well loved and long time member of BWA passed on in 2000 at the age of 87. She was the founder of Women in Distress and directed the opening of the first shelter in 1974, helped with the expansion of a School for the Deaf and The Meals On Wheels Program. All of this was in addition to her illustrious career as a national award winning journalist for "The Fort Lauderdale News" expanding the Women's section from society party news to progressive content that tackled progressive important social issues. Her witty column "Ah Men" ran for 17 years. She was named to the Broward County Women's Hall of Fame and was well respected as an avid campaigner for women's rights. Please join with Barbara Van Voast and Tery Sjogren in honoring this wonderful woman who exemplified the Mission of The Broward Women's Alliance. Barbara Van Voast is a Professional member of The American Society of Interior Designers [ASID]. She has been President of Van Voast Interiors since 1983 and does both residential and commercial design work throughout Florida and Internationally. As a stylist for major home furnishings manufacturers she has traveled to markets in Europe and The Netherlands. She is a student of Healing Touch for Animals and an active supporter of animal rights. As a volunteer for The State of Florida's Guardian ad Litem program she advocates for abused, neglected and abandoned children and recruits for the program. Her latest project is The Friends of Edee Greene memorial sculpture project detailed elsewhere in this newsletter. Edee was a good friend and mentor to her and to many other women in this community. Barbara serves on The City of Fort Lauderdale Community Appearance Board and is active in several arts and historic preservation organizations. |
