June 2008 2nd Edition - Issue: #34
Welcome:

Special thanks to author Margatet Ahnert for her interesting and informative presentation in May.

Meeting Information/Speaker:
Thanks to the scholarship committee headed by Gloria Kline, as well as Connie Chaney and Linda Pratt, for their hard work in choosing five deserving scholarship winners. Scholarships will be presented at the upcoming meeting. The winners are:
Carolina Acedo--age 32-- who is finishing a major in Finance at BCC as a stepping-stone to one day being a corporate attorney

Felieth Billings--age 48--who has practiced as an LPN for 14 years and is now working toward her RN

Jessica Grosholz--age 37--a single mother of three who, after a variety of necessary jobs, will find a career after finishing an AA in nursing

Luci Nokolopoulos--age 37--who will receive her AA in nursing at the end of the second summer term

Dawn Palughi--age 38--an outstanding teacher at Bennett Elementary School, who will be finishing her MS in Education on student loans because there are no scholarships available for graduate work.

All of these women have personal histories of effort, attainment, and often sheer struggle to attain their goals. All speak of a desire to help others like them and to give back to the community that has helped them along.

foundation’s “Investing in Broward’s Future” message that they stepped up to
donate more than $530,000, including a $50,000 challenge grant from the
Mellon Foundation. Congratulations, Nancy!

Myra Gross Schoen announces the fourth anniversary of Harmony Elder Services, Inc. The homemaker-companion agency has grown to include more than 30 current clients and 50-plus companions.

Judge Gisele Pollack is the new chairperson of the Florida Association of Drug Court Professionals for 2008-2010.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Starmark International hosted motivational speaker and marketing consultant Maria Soldani for an empowering work-life balance program at its StarBar Networking Center. Entitled "How to put more Gusto into Life!" the all-women networking event gathered top female marketing executives for an evening of fun, food and inspiration.

Gloria Kline shares with us that Ruth Brown will undergo surgery in mid June. Cheer her up with cards addresses to 340 Sunset Drive, #1411, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301-2640.
The State has requested that in addition to the municipalities, they would like to see as many letters of support from the general public as well as businesses, associations, civic organizations, clubs and business groups.

Cynthia Baker is requesting help from our membership as well as from our Board for the County to obtain our AIA Scenic Highway designation.  This has been an on-going process for about 4 years.  We just obtained eligibility designation and now are pursuing the actual designation.  This will enable to us to receive grant monies that can help implement signage, landscaping, etc. that the group decides is needed along the AIA corridor from Hallandale to Lighthouse Point.

Anything we can do to help them achieve the designation will be greatly appreciated.

Members will receive the sample letter by e mail.
