October 2008 2nd Edition - Issue: #36
Welcome:
Many thanks to our speaker last month, Melanie Dickinson, publisher of the South Florida Business Journal for a very interesting presentation.
Meeting Information/Speaker:
Our speaker for October is Harriet Johnson Brackey. She is the personal finance columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and has been an award-winning business reporter for more than two and a half decades. Brackey has worked at Business Week magazine and at USA TODAY, where she was a founder and part of the original staff of the Money section at the country’s first national newspaper. After nearly 11 years there -spent covering the 1980s bull market, the insider trading scandals, the 1987 crash -Brackey left Washington, D.C., and came to The Miami Herald. She spent the next decade writing a column about personal finance that chronicled the stock market’s Internet boom and bust, as well as the popular Money Makeover features. Brackey also appears regularly as a commentator on The Nightly Business Report, which is broadcast nationally on more than 250 PBS television stations. She joined the Sun-Sentinel in August 2005. HER SUBJECT WILL BE “HOW TO SURVIVE THE CURRENT ECONOMICAL CHAOS.”

Member News:
Gloria Kline shares this note of appreciation she received from a BWA scholarship winner.

It was an honor to be chosen as a recipient of this prestigious award. Its support has kept me from worrying so much about the cost of school tuition during the summer semester and made it possible for me to conclude four classes that I needed to earn my Associate degree. I will be forever grateful.

Words cannot describe how it feels to obtain financial relief while pursuing my goals. I look forward to the time that I can help others as you helped me.
