December 2008 2nd Edition - Issue: #38
Welcome:

Welcome to our December Broward Women’s Alliance newsletter!

I hope you all enjoyed a very Happy Thanksgiving with loved ones. Hard as it is to believe, it’s now time to turn our attention to the December holidays.

HOLIDAY GIFTS

At our upcoming December 8th meeting, the Executive Committee is asking you to remember the less fortunate by bringing gifts for those served by two of our members’ non-profit organizations – Covenant House and Women in Distress.

Suzanne Higgins provided us with a Wish List for the Covenant House teens at our last meeting. Some of the items on that list are: gift cards for Target and Payless Shoes, unisex wallets and digital watches, belts, bath sets, board games, DVDs PG 13 and under, rain ponchos, wash cloths or body sponges and large bath and beach towels.

Mary Riedel is asking for very practical items for the women and children at Women in Distress – gift cards, particular for Publix and Target, baby diapers and formula and cleaning products.

The Executive Committee voted to forego the members’ gift exchange this year, so that more of our dollars could go to the needs outlined above. Gifts will be collected at the December 8th meeting.

Thank you for all that you will do to make this a happier holiday for those most in need.

Dessert and Coffee Sponsorship

Thanks to MEDIC PHARMACY & SURGICAL for sponsoring the dessert and coffee at the Broward Women’s Alliance November meeting in support of the scholarship fund.  The scholarship fund is an important and worthwhile project of our organization and has benefited many women since it was developed when Ruth Brown was BWA President more than twelve years ago.

Medic Pharmacy, located at 5150 North Federal Highway (just north of Commercial), is a full-service pharmacy and Durable Medical Equipment Company.  According to Gail Kaplan, it offers area delivery, accept most insurances and are priced competitively.

We still have some openings for Dessert and Coffee sponsors in early 2009. Sponsors are invited to speak about their businesses for 3 minutes at the podium, and provide materials at a specially designated table near the entryway to our meeting. Cost is just $250. Please email Dorothy at dklein@bplfoundation.org if you’re interested.

 Mamma Mia!

We all know that Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good show. Why not start the year off feeling really good?!  I’m hoping that 14 BWA members/spouses/friends will want to join me at the Broward Center on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 for the 8 p.m. show. Discounted group tickets are $58.85 – we’d be in the mezzanine, Rows E and F Center. That’s a saving of about $6 per ticket.

In order to secure the tickets, we’d need to move ahead on this as soon as possible. Please let me know if you’re interested either via email – dklein@bplfoundation.org – or at Monday December 8th meeting.  This isn’t a fundraiser, but simply an opportunity to enjoy an evening out with good BWA friends.
