April 2009 2nd Edition - Issue: #42
Welcome:

Welcome to our March Broward Women's Alliance Newsletter

I’m looking forward to seeing you at Monday’s meeting, where you’ll meet Ms. Florida and hear her speak about an issue of concern to us all, domestic violence. Please see below for more information.

Dessert and Coffee Sponsor: Special thanks to Elly Du Pre of Lighthouse of Broward, who is the Dessert and Coffee  Sponsor for April.

Join BWA at Florida Marlins suite on May 19: One of the classic signs of spring is the annual BWA fundraising visit to the ballpark to watch a Florida Marlins baseball game. This year, thanks to the generosity of BWA member Nancy Olson of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation, we are invited to the 7:10 p.m. game on Tuesday, May 19, when the Marlins play the Arizona Diamondbacks. We’ll watch the game from the comfort of a suite, with hot dogs, popcorn and other goodies provided courtesy of Nancy. The cost is $50 per ticket, all of which goes into the BWA Scholarship Fund. We have 16 tickets available.  In addition, the Florida Marlins Community Foundation also provides a $1,000 grant to the BWA Scholarship Fund. So please put this date on your calendar, and let Joanne Davis (joanne.davis@lls.org) know if you are able to attend.

Cooking with Lenore: Our “Shaken and Stirred Evening with Lenore” was a great success last month! I hope you had a chance to see some of the photos on the BWA website. Besides learning some new cooking techniques, eating a fabulous meal, and having fun, we helped raise more than $600 for the BWA Scholarship Fund. Thank you, Lenore!!

BWA Scholarship: The BWA Scholarship Committee will be reviewing applications this month from needy Broward women who are enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an accredited educational institution in Broward County. The Executive Committee voted this week to award 5 scholarships, with a value of up to $2,000 each. We are fortunate that we have $10,000 available this year to give in scholarships – and it’s all thanks to you, our members! If you know someone who would qualify for one of these scholarships, it’s not too late to contact Committee Chair Gloria Kline at 954-764-8458, or at whoissylvia@bellsouth.net. Gloria can provide you with the scholarship application.

Website Updates:  Each member is responsible for updating their own information on the website (new emails, change of address). See easy instructions below and forward photos to Joanne Davis to upload. Contact Joanne if you need assistance.  joanne.davis@lls.org

Special thanks to Debbie Wiggin of Miller, Wiggin and Associates.  Debbie was the Coffee and Dessert Sponsor for March.
